Art has been used as a tool to tell stories and educate communities since the times of the ancient Mesopotamians and Greeks. The works communicate important messages and commentary about the time, place, and context in which they were created. While renowned museums keep records of historical works, contemporary art galleries play an integral role in showcasing up-and-coming and celebrated artists of today.

There are countless exhibition spaces and fairs in the world focusing on contemporary art. However, the ones that stand out as the best art galleries often embrace the latest generation of artists and showcase never-before-seen mediums. From a gallery that originated in one man's Paris apartment to an Ethiopian space bringing African art to the forefront, here are 12 of the best contemporary art galleries from across the world.
