Martha Stewart is a fashion icon (after all, she was a model before she became a cookbook author, TV personality, or publisher), and she’s no stranger to experimenting with accessories. Stewart doesn’t shy away from statement pieces—like the bold earrings seen here—so we were curious about her all-time favorite piece of jewelry.

When we sat down with Stewart earlier this summer to chat, she said, “My favorite piece(s) of jewelry are my canary diamond earrings that were a gift from one of my boyfriends.” When asked if the boyfriend with excellent taste could be named, Stewart smiled coyly, pretended to think about it, and said, “Hmm, no.”

Though the man in question remains a mystery, and we don’t know exactly what Stewart’s favorite canary diamond earrings look like, there are a few things we do know about her favorite jewels. For starters, canary diamonds (named after the little yellow bird) are also commonly called fancy yellow diamonds. The stones get their striking color from nitrogen molecules contained in their structure, which absorb blue light and turn the stone a beautiful yellow shade. Though traditional colorless diamonds can have a tinge of yellow—which is considered a negative quality—pure yellow canary diamonds are actually sought after for their eponymous hue. Since these natural canary yellow diamonds are quite rare, they typically command a higher price.

So, once again, Martha Stewart is making us want something we probably don’t need. If you’re lusting after an ultra-chic pair of canary yellow diamond earrings, here are our three favorite picks to help you copy Martha Stewart’s favorite piece of jewelry for yourself.
