This product was carefully selected by tastemaker Wes Gordon for Instant Heirloom.

When it comes to creative expressions, Wes Gordon knows that the stories behind elegant pieces are often just as important as the pieces themselves. Our VERANDA team called on the creative director of Carolina Herrera to select a new product that he deems heirloom-worthy—and why it’s deserving of being passed down from one generation to the next.

It should come as no surprise that the memory behind his chosen timepiece—Patek Philippe’s Calatrava watch in white gold—is as legendary as the fashion house he represents. Sleek and sophisticated, this Genevan piece looks as handsome at work as it does at a black-tie event. Here, the designer shares more on this memorable instant heirloom.

What makes this piece an instant heirloom?

My husband, Paul, proposed to me with this piece at a picnic at Hacienda de San Antonio,” Gordon says. “It’s the sentiment that makes it so special to me. It’s a truly beautiful piece I’ll have forever from my husband.”

What gives this timepiece staying power?

“It has staying power because it’s very classic, simple, and clean-lined. It is a timeless piece, and I look forward to giving it to our son, Henry, one day!” says Gordon.

How would you style it?

“I love that I can wear this timepiece with a beautiful sweater to the office, or I can wear it with a tuxedo to a gala,” he says.

Are there any icons of the past that seem like kindred spirits to this piece?

“Andy Warhol had the same watch in yellow gold,” Gordon notes.
