When you think of Memorial Day, you may consider it as the unofficial start to summer and picture long weekends spent at the lake, beach, or pool with plenty of barbecue and a favorite bottle of rosé. You also may think about mattress sales.
The long weekend is a popular time for sales of all kinds, but Rakuten says mattresses are one of the best items to shop during this holiday. Sleep Advisor says that May is the best month of the year to purchase a mattress as brands typically release new models in June and are willing to offer hefty discounts to make way for upcoming products.
There are other reasons why Memorial Day Weekend is prime mattress shopping time from a consumer standpoint, with reasons that date all the way back to 1968. It was then that Congress signed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved multiple federal holidays to Mondays in order to give workers several long weekends spread throughout the year. Now, we have even more time to research and shop the best holiday deals since work isn’t getting in the way of scoring big on appliances, tech, and of course, mattresses.
The time for spring cleaning has also just come and gone. A representative from Avocado Mattress says this season is the main time to invest in our homes, which could be another contributing factor to holding major mattress sales during the last weekend in May. After all the deep cleans and re-organization of our homes, we may just be realizing how some of our furniture is no longer serving us well.
Each year, over 40 million Americans move—60% of whom move between May and September—so many consumers are also purging items as they prepare to relocate or are upgrading items like mattresses and appliances during their move.
