As a lover of all things antique, the Gallery at 200 Lex is my ultimate version of a treasure trove. Here, high up on the tenth floor of the famed New York Design Center, are scores of unique pieces and decorative finds waiting to be uncovered. Whether brimming with 18th century English consoles or Italian midcentury table lamps, booth after booth at the Gallery presents the incredible discoveries of some of the best vintage and antique dealers in the country.

Imagine my delight then at being the Gallery's inaugural guest curator on behalf of VERANDA this fall. Tasked with designing the Gallery's central hall, I spent many magical hours combing through each dealer's space on the quest for the beautiful and the rarefied. What started as a purely decorative pursuit though quickly became an education in design history, as I studied and considered objects ranging from the charmingly rustic to the incredibly refined. The resulting vignettes, I hope, are intriguing combinations of history and high style, and also, most importantly, inviting spaces where you can linger.

From Irish George III mirrors to an exquisite Empire-era daybed, there are so many noteworthy pieces at the Gallery to behold—and shop! Read on to discover a few of my very favorite pieces on display.

1

Early 19th Century Swedish Vitrine

I have a passion for the Gustavian era and this ivory painted vitrine from Modern Antiquarian is a true showstopper. My favorite part about this piece is its patinaed sea green interior, which serves as a striking backdrop for a collection of objects, like these colorful studio glass vases arranged en masse.

2

Serpentine Mahogany Sofa

From the moment I saw this monumental mahogany sofa at Richard McGeehan Studio, I knew it would be a centerpiece of the space. Dating from circa 1840, its gracefully curving lines and serpentine back create a strong sense of movement against the white gallery walls.

3

19th Century Ship Dioramas

One of my favorite and most surprising finds at the Gallery was an incredible collection of 19th century ship dioramas from Leftovers Antiques. Intricately painted and constructed, these folk art pieces lend a bit of rustic charm over a mahogany console table.

Midcentury Side Table

Karl Kemp Antiques has a pair of these wonderfully petite midcentury side tables and I positioned one of them between two Swedish Grace movement barrel back chairs. I love how the glass top allows for its ribbon-like gilt iron base to shine through.

1950s Brass, Walnut and Glass Bar Cart

Just about every room is well served by a bar cart. I was drawn to this Northern Italian 1950s brass and walnut design for its jaunty wheels and graceful handles. Whether filled with bottles and glassware or interesting objets (like this tiny lamp), its generous two tiers make for an ideal place for display.

6

Irish George III Mirrors

I have always admired the elegance of Irish George III mirrors—there is something about the combination of their simple oval silhouettes dressed up with faceted cut-glass gems that feels incredibly refined. Here, I grouped three gorgeous 18th and 19th century examples from O'Sullivan Antiques over an exquisite Empire-style daybed in a playful take on a gallery wall.

1950s Italian Savonarola Chairs

With their sinuous lines made of iron and brass, Italian Savonarola chairs feel like sculpture. I love how this vintage white bouclé-covered pair from Modern Retro Finds became an unexpected partner to a traditional Louis XVI-style gueridon table.

8

Red Lacquered Chinoiserie Panels

Lacquered in a deep red with gold and blue accents, this stunning set of six chinoiserie panels from Elizabeth Pash Antiques is a true work of art. I used the panels to ground this seating arrangement, but they would look equally incredible over a console or fireplace.

9

Empire Period Mahogany Console

I placed a pair of these spectacular marble-topped mahogany swan consoles on opposite walls to anchor the space. Besides their highly detailed, statuesque carvings, what appealed to me most about them was their handsome scale.

Venetian Crystal Wall Lights

Having a hint of sparkle is an essential accent in any room. These Venetian crystal wall lights from Guy Regal, made of a beaded wire frame mounted over an antiqued mirrored back, would look magical illuminated at night.
